The Balearic Islands are found 200 kilometre south of Barcelona off the Southern Spanish coast in the Mediterranean. There are
four islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. They offer around 300 days of sunshine every year, fabulous scenery,
beautiful white beaches and crystal clear blue seas and are well-known for their friendly hospitality.
Mallorca
The largest island - 3,640 square kilometres, population of half a million
The north of the island has the magnificant Tramuntana mountains, the centre of the island is covered in pretty historic villages
and the East has a fabulous coastline
Mallorca's capital is Palma the only true city in the Balearics, based in the south west of the island.
The island, favoured by the rich and famous, offers a championship golf course.
Property prices continue to rise every year.
Much investment has gone into redeveloping the island and new developments are generally low-rise
and beautifully designed.
Mallorca also offers many traditional whitewashed houses for sale

Menorca
The second largest island - 702 square kilometres, just 47 kilometres long, population of 62,000
The whole of the island offers fabulous beaches, making it perfect for families; the north is more rugged
and the south flatter.
Menorca's capital, Mahon, is the second largest natural harbour in the world.
The island is home to talayots and taulas - historical stone mounds with origins lost in the passage
of time.
Declared as a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the island is far from overdeveloped, offering good property investments.

Ibiza
The third largest island, population of 110,000
Ibiza Town is the capital, famous for its nightlife.
Ibiza also offers nearly 60 beaches, some only accessible by foot.
The north of the island is covered in pine-covered hills with almond, fig and olive groves.

Santa Eulària d'es Riu - Ibiza's third largest town, one of Spain's most pleasant resorts, on Ibiza's only river, 16th century
church and two stunning beaches sloping down to the sea
Port Esportiu - redeveloped harbour filled with bars, restaurants and watersports

Only accessible from Ibiza by ferry (1 hour).
Small island with only one town and several small villages.

| The Balearic islands all offer stunning seafood dishes; the King of Spain's favourite restaurant (Es Pla) in Fornells offers
wonderful lobster in the form of caldereta de llagosta. Also popular are beef, mutton and pork, with special
combinations of sweet and sour elements in the same dish plus vegetable and pulses. Cold meats and sausages made from port,
are also special to the Balearics, the most famous being sobrasada. Pastries are also important; normally based on
almonds (which are grown on the islands). Olives and figs are common too, including a wide variety of unusual stuffed
olives.
The Balearics produce a large number of aromatice liquers, known commonly as herbes. Menorca also has its own gin
factory producing traditional 'London' gin at Xoriguer and local cheese known as Mahon
The islanders also make beautiful shoes at very competitive price. The Menorcans also make some unique sandals called
alvarcas.
The islands are also famed for pearls, the best selection available in Mallorca.
Traditional Spanish pottery is available everywhere, as is the collectable Spanish Lladro china.
The islands are also famous for their watersport facilities due to the Mediterranean's crystal clear warm sea.
